Sechseläuten, Zurich Spring Festival

Sechseläuten is in many respects a celebration of joy. Zurich says goodbye to the long, cold winter nights and is looking forward to the warmer seasons. The Limmat city celebrates its spring festival with a colourful parade for children on Sunday and the actual parade of the Sechseläuten on Monday. The highlight is the symbolic burning of winter in the shape of a snowman - the Böögg. Thousands of costumed guilds and tens of thousands of spectators populate the city of Zurich on the Sechseläuten weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people all over Switzerland follow the parade on Monday and the burning of the Böögg on television - because for some years now, the period of time that elapses from the lighting of the fire to the explosion of the Bööggenkopf has been taken as a yardstick for the weather development of the following summer. Highlights of the festivities on the Sechseläuten weekend in April are the procession of the guilds to the fire and the mutual guild visits in the evening.
